#18 - Looking pro as a cyclist

In this interesthings: Why some people look amazing as a cyclist, and some don't.

The Netherlands is getting chilly, which means indoor training is now the hot topic among riders. Recently, I noticed some knee discomfort during my rides - turns out it was an IT band issue. Fortunately, I caught and addressed it quickly.

In this edition of Interesthings, I'm diving into the art of looking pro as a cyclist - through the lens of a designer. Get ready for some guidelines that'll transform your cycling style!

Looking Pro (While Going Your Own Pace)

What separates the stylish cyclists from the rest? Think Mathieu van der Poel or Mattia Gaffuri, who always look incredibly sharp. How can you achieve that same level of cycling chic? Let me share three rules I swear by.

1. Keep It Simple

Most cyclists start by filling their wardrobes with vibrant, eye-catching kits. Those limited edition Maap or Pas Normal pieces seem exciting at first, but they can quickly feel dated.

I've learned this lesson not just in cycling gear, but in everyday clothing too. Those flashy sweaters I once loved? They now collect dust in my closet.

My golden rule: Start with timeless, versatile colors. Think dark blue, black, grey, green, and white. These shades:

  • Never go out of style

  • Mix and match effortlessly

  • Look clean and professional

Pro tip: Take inspiration from cyclists like @rikdevoogd or @mattia.gaffuri. Notice how their kits use minimal designs and neutral colors? That's intentional. Brands like Pas Normal nail this approach with simple text logos and understated designs.

Bonus: By buying fewer, more versatile pieces, you're also being more environmentally friendly.

2. Embrace White

There's something magical about fresh white socks. They instantly elevate your look because white:

  • Represents cleanliness

  • Enhances color contrast

  • Looks crisp against skin tone

Make white your secret weapon. At minimum, opt for white socks and a white helmet. Trust me, it'll make you look more professional.

3. Fit is Everything

Your cycling kit should feel like a second skin. Loose clothing? That's a style no-no. A perfectly fitted kit:

  • Makes you look faster

  • Enhances your body's lines

  • Boosts confidence

I'll admit, I once wore bibs that made me look like I was wearing a diaper. Not a good look! Now, I prioritise fit - either by sizing down or finding brands that match my body type.

4. The glasses

Your glasses are the thing that stand out. It’s the first thing people notice. So getting some amazing looking cycling glasses is a thing that definitely elevates your style. I currently have the Oakley Kato. These are some glasses I would recommend:
